Diment Park
SPRING IS UPON US AT DIMENT PARK and we want to call your attention to some special planting done in October, 2019 in preparation for Earth Day 2020 -- a date when we were unexpectedly forced indoors. So 2021 is our first opportunity to enjoy spring and summer bloom of these new plantings. Let's hope they thrived in our absence.
Diment Park is located on the slope of Church Street (a one-way street running between the Carlisle Public School and Green Cemetery). It is a toddler playground for children age 5 and younger, situated between Spalding Field and the tennis courts. The park is where our youngest residents play and socialize. When it was built in about 2000, it was surrounded by plantings so that the youngsters could learn about the importance of dragonflies, bugs, and pollination while they played.
Over the years the plantings have grown and the playground now includes mostly shade-loving, flowering plants. Recommended bulbs for woodland gardens are crocus, scilla, muscari, anemone and English bluebells. Naturalizing narcissi flower later in the woodland. Daffodils and other sun-loving bulbs can be planted in the sunnier areas and outside the park in the entrance area. Tulips are not recommended because they are often eaten by wild critters.
This planting event is part of the Carlisle Garden Club Earth Day 2020 celebrations and is open to everyone regardless of age. Additional planting events will be scheduled in the spring of 2020 to ensure that the tot lot gardens attract pollinators throughout the year.
